Living in Lassen County, we are surrounded by ancient volcano's and lava rock is EVERYWHERE. Last week my mom, sister, nephew, my kids, and I spent a day at McArthur-Burney State Park and the little town of McCloud. We had some wonderful views of Mt. Lassen and Mt. Lassen, the southernmost volcano's in the Cascade Mountain Range.

In late May, my mom, the kids, and I went walking on the paved bike trail at Lake Almanor near Prattville. It was a beautiful day and we had a nice view of Mt. Lassen as we were leaving on Highway 89.

Sacramento River Headwaters

This weekend we visited the city park in Mt. Shasta. The Sacramento River Headwaters are located in the park. Some state and city officials disagree whether the headwaters is the official start of the Sacramento River. Either way, its a great park to visit. The water is FULL of leeches. They were everywhere on the rocks. Yuck.

Tonight we bundled up the kids and took them out to look at the Christmas light displays in town. We had to make hot chocolate for the kids and get a blanket for the dog, but we finally made it out the door. There are some wonderful Christmas light displays in Susanville. We didn't make it out to the big display on Richmond Road. Hopefully we will see it later this week. That is the best display for miles, maybe 100 miles. If you haven't gotten out yet, get out there. Its been freezing cold, but well worth it. I hope to take more photos later this week.

Christmas is just around the corner...........and there is so much left to do. I am ahead of the game so far. I think everything is bought and just about wrapped. The only thing left on my list is some baking. I hope you all pace yourselves so there is no last minute craziness!

The river is starting to ice over along the shady parts of the water. My kids thought it was cool, until my son fell in. LOL Its a great time of year to get out and walk on the trail, so get out there!!! The entrance to Hobo Camp has been closed for the season. The Miller Road trailhead has parking.

We braved the cold this morning to watch the Veteran's Day Parade. From where we were sitting, it didn't look like a good turn out. But I could be wrong. My kids had a great time. There was alot of candy tossed by the kids organizations. My girl scout troop didn't march this year, I thought we were going to be out town.

November is here and I am waiting for the snow! Last year there was very little snow, so now its time for the other shoe to drop! I love having the snow for a few days, but it gets old fast! My kids were asking when I thought it would snow again. I replied, Hopfully not for awhile. For those of you dying for the snow, enjoy these photos from last year.

Burney Falls

A few weeks we took the kids to Burney Falls. They LOVE the waterfall park! Best of all, the camp store was still open.......so that means ice cream!!! Who wouldn't love to visit the waterfalls and eat ice cream??!! I love visiting in the fall: its not crowded, its not HOT, Lake Britton is calm, and the scenery is amazing. My daughter was able to read many of the signs by herself, so that was pretty cool to see. She is such a big girl now!

Last weeks dusting of snow was odd. Its not even Halloween yet! We must be in for a long winter. Tonights forecast is for snow to drop to the valley floor. But, the weather forecasts here are famous for being wrong. So I bet we will get snow on Saturday, lol. That is usually how it works out around here. Stay warm Lassen County!

This weekend we stopped at the park in Clear Creek, Lassen County. The duck pond had quite a few ducks. These two ducks followed us around looking for food. Every time the ducks went underwater to eat, my kids yelled 'Duck Butt!' When both ducks went under at the same time, the kids yelled 'Double Duck Butts!'. It was cute. I know the older they get, the less interested they will become, so I am enjoying these years.

This old barn sits on the edge of Chester, close to Lake Almanor. I love old barns. I need to come back and take some photos of this early in the morning sometime.

Autumn is upon us. My favorite time of year!

The rest stop outside Chester is a great place to view Lake Almanor. Normally in early fall, the lake is nice and blue. Sunday it was totally covered by smoke.

The smoke from the Moonlight fire wasn't that bad at this point, Sunday, September 9. It had been worse a few days before this.

I love visiting Chester and walking around at their little gift shops. Its a great place to spend an afternoon. Most of the tourists have gone home for the season, so its not crowded. Eagle Lake, September 9, 2007.

The Orange Lichen is pretty cool. Its all over these rocks along the bike trail just past the Gallatin Marina.

These baby fish were EVERYWHERE near the marina. They stayed close to the rock wall jetty. The Western Grebes were close by too. Easy eating for them.

Sunday was a beautiful day to be on the water. There was little wind around lunch time, but the fishermen had already been out and back in by this time.

The chipmunks at Eagle Lake are known for not having fear of humans. This little guy followed us around for a bit.

This past Sunday, the kids and I spent the day with my mom. We spent the day at Eagle Lake, Chester, and Clear Creek. I will post some photos today, and the rest later this week. We had a great time.

These photos were taken around 11 am on Friday, August 7th. The smoke seems to have thickened since then. There is little to no breeze, so the smoke is just sitting here.

Today I was hoping to get some nice photos of the river before the leaves change during autumn. No such luck. The smoke from the Moonlight fire is thick. It reminds me of the fog in Sacramento when I was a kid. Luckily Sacramento's fog is gone by lunchtime while the smoke here is getting thicker as the day goes by.

FYI - After school sports at Lassen High are cancelled for today. Lassen was supposed to play Enterprise at home tonight. Looks like they will be playing in the valley tomorrow, unless the smoke clears by early morning.

4 p.m. Update

The wind has really kicked up. That is good and bad. The good part is the smoke that was close to the ground is moving out. But, wind is never good for fire fighters.

These photos were taken between 4:30 and 5 pm from various locations in Susanville and the golf course areas. We were running errands and took advantage of our time out and about. The smoke clouds were huge and covered a good portion of the area.

4:15 pm on Labor Day

Its still fire season here in Northeastern California! Yesterday afternoon a grassfire along Ames & Gold Run Roads broke out. Fire crews contained it and put it out quickly. Just after that fire was out, a new fire about 12 miles outside Susanville started. The Moonlight Wildland Fire is located in Plumas County. The smoke can be seen coming over the Diamond Mountians. By evening, Susanville had a cloud cover of smoke. Ash was falling in certain areas and a golden glow was cast upon us. This morning its still pretty smoky. My camera lens needs to be sent off for repairs. For the past few weeks I have been unable to get it to focus well. Some of these photos are not in focus, or are grainy. So blame my lens, lol.

Skunked at 1 am!!!!!!!!!

His eyes still hurt. Poor puppy! This is just after his 2nd bath.

My pup is so pathetic! He wanted me to hold him, but I was trying to take the pictures, lol. Poor doggie.

My sweet little Boston Terrier, Zito, is like my 3rd child, lol. He just turned one year old at the start of August. He loves when I baby him!!! I think that has led to him being so pathetic when he thinks he is in trouble, or has done something, etc. He scoots low to the ground and usually rolls over on his back and puts his paws in the air, he is not an alpha male! Tonight hubby and I were watching something on the Discovery Channel. Maybe it was the History Channel, I am not sure. I was dozing off and Zito kept wanting to go out back. It was getting to be an annoyance, either stay inside or stay outside. He is worse then the kids, lol. I should have realized he was up to something. At 1 am I opened the door and realized he was hurt. His eyes were closed tightly and he was pawing furiously at his face. SKUNKED!!!!!

I ran him to the shower. OMG, the smell was horrible. The skunk sprayed Zito's face and chest. It was DISGUSTING!!! After being washed (baking soda and dawn dish washing detergent) and rinsed off a few times, I got most of the smell off. Around his eyes smells horrible. I was careful of his eyes, but its just not taking the smell away. I tried baking soda and lemon juice. The smell is still there, but the baking soda and lemon juice had a fun reaction when mixed. (Totally off-topic) I can't wait to show Jack tomorrow when he wakes up. He wants to be an 'experiment man' when he grows up, lol. He will be VERY impressed with the bubbling action of the lemon juice and baking soda. Anyway........

My entire house smells horrible right now. We left the back windows and doors closed, but opened up everything else. My hubby set up fans, and has the air freshener going at all times, lol. Still, the smell lingers........its so gross. I can't sleep now! I am wide awake and 'enjoying' the discovery channel. I use that term loosely, lol. My hubby and the discovery channel!!

I hope the smell on Zito's face wears off soon, poor dog. Hopefully he will remember this and leave skunks alone. That is a long shot but you never know!

**Update** Zito's eyes aren't swollen anymore. He is feeling better but still smells like skunk. Luckily its not very strong. I wrapped him in an old towel and have been holding him. He loves the attention. Now off to bed. I hope I can sleep with the skunk smell, its not nice!

Susanville Air Show

We attended the Susanville Air Show on Saturday. Its a small town event and we enjoyed it. The CDF helicopter was taking off and landing, which was pretty cool. They also filled up the giant bucket under the helicopter and dropped it on the field near the crowd to demonstrate how they help put out fires. The kids loved seeing that.

Hobo Camp

The river reflection caught the rocky mountainside that supports highway 36 west out of town.

Hobo Camp is located on the Bizz Johnson Trail and is a favorite spot for my kids. We like to walk on the bike trail and check out the swim areas near the pedestrian bridge over the river. There are many little trails and we have fun exploring them. Last week we were at Hobo Camp near sunset. I had to snap these fast. The kids were eager to throw rocks in the river and ruin the reflection, lol. They just don't appreciate a good photo op!!!!!

This 'Big Truck' photo is for my 5 year old. He wanted me to photograph every semi, garbage truck, bus, and any other large vehicle driving up Main Street. This truck was 'Really super awesome' according to my son. Gotta love little boys and their fascination with anything that moves.

I was hoping the hazy smoke from a fire west on Highway 32 would lead to a spectacular sunset. I was wrong, but the view from Inspiration Point is awesome. I had never been there before and was pretty impressed by the view. These photos were taken on two separate nights during last week.

My garden didn't get to far this year. My hubby built 3 nice garden beds. Unfortunately, that was as far as our vegetable garden went this year. We have sunflowers, nasturtium, and phlox all over, but no veggies. My friend, Denise, has a great garden. Her veggies are growing like crazy. The kids and I were with her recently and I took a few photos. The Diamond Mountians are the background of the corn row, its a great view!

Can you believe that September is just around the corner? Where did the summer go? So far August has been mild, thank goodness. This week its supposed to be in the cool 80s, well, cooler then usual. This morning I decided to go take some photos at sunrise. I have to admit its been awhile since I have actually been outside for a sunrise, I am usually laying in bed 'hoping' the kids will sleep a little longer, lol. They are my early risers!

I was FREEZING this morning. It was 48 degrees and WINDY! It was too windy for photos, I was having issues even with my tri-pod set up. It didn't help that I was freezing too! Enjoy!

Roadside Junkyard

Last Fall I was checking out some of the roads just past Wendel and happened upon this wreck. It is sitting on the California/Nevada border. I had no idea that Wendel and Herlong were that close to the border, now I have a map!

This bus is wasting away in a field just behind the Lassen Beverage Company on Alexander Street. This photo is from last fall, just as a rain storm was lifting. The sun was touching down on this spot, while the clouds were shading the surrounding the areas.

The Susan River is like any river in a populated area. Careless folks toss in whatever they won't take home with them. This photo was taken near the Susan River Bike Trail and the Alexander Street Bridge. Its a popular fishing area, in fact this is the first time I have been there and only one person was fishing. Normally it's very busy. I think its also a popular area to hang out and drink. The river bank had litter everywhere. I did notice there are no garbage cans in this area at all. Maybe the city should place a few garbage cans along the bike trail to help minimize the litter issues.

Janesville, CA covered in smoke on July 6th. The smoke is from the Antelope Complex Fire near Antelope Lake. That is such a bummer. Antelope Lake is an amazing place to fish, boat, and camp. (Check my June posts for a nice pic of the lake) It hasn't recovered from the fire that burned a good portion of the recreation area a few years ago.

Thunderstorms on July 5, 2007 sparked numerous fires in Plumas County. A fire near Antelope Lake, about 20 miles south of Susanville is a pretty large fire. The Sacramento Bee is calling it the Antelope Complex Fire, and local news are calling it the Wheeler Fire. The last report had it burning nearly 4,000 acres and less then 10% contained.

I hope everyone had a great 4th of July! We had a nice time. We spent the afternoon at Denise's house, tons of kids, tons, of food, and lots of fun! We did fireworks at her house, then went up to the BLM parking lot to watch the fireworks show at the fairgrounds. We had great seats and the kids loved it!

I forgot my tri-pod, and my photos aren't very good. Sitting still enough to get a great shot is not that easy. But a few of the photos were interesting looking, so I will post those!

So we get home close to 11 pm and my refrigerator is not on. Its plugged in, nothin! So we try a different outlet and nothin! I tried my blender on the same outlet and nothin! I was so glad it was an easy fix. Dave flipped the fuse box and we were good to go. I am not sure how long it off, everything was still cold.

We went up to Eagle Lake to walk on the bike trail and hang out. It was windy & cold, so we didn't go swimming. The kids had a great time climbing on the rocks and checking out the wildlife. We saw pelicans, lake birds, a bunny, & tons of chipmunks.

I took this photo of Mt. Lassen last October. It was an overcast day and valley residents were burning trash piles. The smoke was on the valley floor and the clouds were hiding the top part of the volcano. We hiked up to the Hat Creek Rim Scenic Outlook rest stop, they must lock the gates in late September. During the summer months, the outlook has telescopes. You can see Mt. Lassen on right and Mt. Shasta on the left. Talk about an amazing view!

Today the kids 'needed' to have a lemonade stand out front. I should have known better. They lost interest within an hour and I was running the lemonade stand, lol. My friend, Denise, came over with her son, Justin. So we closed the lemonade stand early. (We made $5! Thanks to Denise, my neighbors, my mom, the Fedex guy, and the movers from Robbins House of Furniture!)

We were sipping lemonade in the front yard and saw some smoke in the distance. I asked Denise if she wanted to go check the fire with me. Maybe I would get some good shots of it. I wanted to see how close it was to my parents house. Well, it ended up being a huge fire. AND it was right behind our friends house!!!!

So Denise, the kids, and I stopped at Helen's to see if we could help pack up or whatever. She wasn't home, but her hubby was. Denise and I were kind of freaking out, it was RIGHT behind their house. Most of my photos were taken from their back deck! But her hubby was cool headed and we ended up hanging out for a few minutes until Helen came home. We helped her pack a few things. Luckily the local fire crews, CDF, US Forest Service, etc were able to get the fire under control. The fire did reach homes down the road from Helen. I hope no one was injured and no one lost their homes. When we left, we saw a house that was not burned, but everything around it was completely gone. Trucks, play equipment, etc.

Thanks to all who saved those homes on Richmond Road & the adjacent roads. Susanville FD, Janesville FD, inmate fire crews from the CCC camps, US Forest Service, (I am probably missing some agencies) and especially the CDF. The CDF planes and helicopters really knocked out the fire.

Today the kids and I met up with some friends at Eagle Lake. It was a bit windy, but we had a great time. The kids got ahold of some crackers and fed the seagulls. It was insane! One of the kids lost his intertube. The wind kicked up and blew it over the lake. It was so far away we could barely see it. Luckily, the Lassen County Sheriff's lake patrol picked it up and brought it back. The kids were so excited to see the police boat. That was so nice of them to bring the intertube back!

Susanville Cemetery

Jack and I went to the cemetery just before sunset for some photographs. I didn't think to bring bug spray, I wish I had. The mosquito's were horrible! Jack was moving around alot, so he was fine, but I was under attack! I have sunscreen in the car, now I need to add bug spray!

The start of fire season!

The start of the 2007 Fire Season is upon us! Spot fires from lightening started a small fire near my house. It seems to have been contianed by the CDF. They had a helicopter, CDF crews, and looks like an inmate crew on the scene pretty quickly. I will have to keep an eye on the hill tonight just to be sure its out! It's been awhile since we have been evacuated for fires, so cross your fingers!

This is the nature area behind the school. Its just down the street from us.

The Subway Caves & Burney Falls

If you have never visited the Hat Creek Subway Caves or McArthur-Burney Falls State Park, then you should! The campgrounds and rv parks along Hat Creek are amazing! Lake Britton is just below Burney Falls. It is a great campground. This spring the state revamped a few of the campground areas and upgraded the facilities at Lake Britton. It was really busy at the falls on Memorial Day weekend, which made photographing much almost impossible. But its always a great spot to visit no matter how large the crowd.
